Welcome to Byrd Elementary, Home of the Excellent Eagles!
Character Education
The Character Word for the month of April is PEACE -  "proving you care more about each other than winning an argument."  This trait is typified by the DOVE.

Congratulations!
We are excited to announce that student Gage Morris’ artwork submitted for participation in Palmetto Pride’s Litter Trashes Everyone Art Contest has been chosen as the Midlands Regional winner. Congratulations to Gage and thank you to teacher Beth Teeters for participating and submitting Gage’s artwork in the contest.  All of the school winners’ artwork has been on display at Tapp’s Art Center (http://www.tappsartscenter.com/), 1644 Main Street, Columbia for the month of March in celebration of Youth Art month.
VARIETY SHOW
Congratulations to everyone who performed in the Soaring Eagles Variety Show on Friday, March 27th.  The show was a HUGE success, and we want to especially thank our PTO, the corporate and individual sponsors, and all volunteers who worked to make this show the class act that it has become.

New State Testing Update
This past summer the S. C. Legislature changed the state testing program.  A new test called Aspire will be given in grades 3 through 8 to test reading, writing, English, math, and science. Students in grades 4-8 will continue to take the SCPASS tests for science and social studies.  The Aspire tests will be given on April 28 through May 1, and the two SCPASS tests will be administered on May 7 and 8, 2015.

The biggest change that our students will notice is that each Aspire subtest has a time limit.  Students will be tested for approximately one hour per day, and the writing test must be completed in 30 minutes.  Some students may not finish before they must stop working and turn in their tests.  Our students are more familiar with the SCPASS tests, which have no specific time limits.  Teachers are currently providing practice for students so that they will become more comfortable with the timed tests.    The two different science tests will allow us to assess our students’ knowledge of the South Carolina science standards while still being able to compare our students’ achievement with their peers nationally.

Wanting more localized information about the new tests? The District’s Director of Administrative Services and several Academic Officers discussed the ACT Aspire, the ACT and WorkKeys in an Aiken Standard Article. If you missed it over Spring Break, those articles and other information on new tests are available on the District’s website under “ACT New Testing Information,” http://acps.schoolfusion.us/modules/cms/pages.phtml?pageid=324087&0dadc5&0dadc5&sessionid=13bcafef25f727007e1e2b7c796840b7

SchoolFusion Parent Accounts

A SchoolFusion Parent Account allows parents to view all of their children’s classroom information in one web location. Parents can check assignments, view important deadlines on FusionPage calendars, follow their children's sports calendars, school events and much more!  Once parents have created an account email notifications will be sent when new announcements and assignments are added.  Only parents/guardians of students enrolled in Aiken County Public School District are allowed to register.

See instructions under Parent and Student Information to the left.
